The New York Times has reported that Rachel L. Brand, the No. 3 official at the Justice Department, will be stepping down only nine months after being appointed next in line to Deputy Attorney general, Rod Rosenstein.
The significance of this can’t be overstated.
With Rosenstein under fire for his role in orchestrating the appointment of Robert Mueller as special counsel, and Attorney General Jeff Sessions having recused himself, it is not beyond reason that Brand could’ve found herself in charge of special counsel Robert Mueller.
President Trump appointed Brand to her current position following a distinguished decade and a half career with the DOJ that began under President Bush.
Despite the potentially high profile opportunity Brand chose to get out now. Why?
It’s likely Brand’s exit is more evidence that she has examined the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence (Nunes) memo, and the findings of the Senate’s Subcommittee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs, as well as the letter recently sent by the Senate’s Judiciary committee that makes a criminal referral to both the FBI and the DOJ based on FISA violations, and that she decided this was a coming shitstorm she didn’t want to be caught in the middle of.
Is Brand’s resignation a sign that there is a looming holocaust about to hit the Justice Department?
Brand likely decided to get out before she became radioactive from the fallout and chose to take a cushy job as global governance director at Walmart, the company’s top legal position.
No one can blame her – draining the D.C. swamp will be a Herculean feat.
